"Studies on Strategy and Security" Honored


On October 13 and 14, 2007 a book fair took place in Yerevan's Liberty Square, jointly organized by the Republican Party, the Araratian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the monthly journal DeFacto (no connection to Defacto News Agency).

As reported in the latest issue of the DeFacto journal (No. 10, 2007), seven books were recognized to be the best (without further ranking) among those published during 2006 and 2007.

The Ararat Center is proud to announce that among these seven is its recent publication Studies on Strategy and Security. Compiled and Edited with an Introduction by Armen Ayvazyan (2007, in Armenian and Russian). It is also the only one among the winners, which covers strategic and foreign policy issues currently facing Armenia (the other six include: fiction, poetry, a study on historical monuments of Nakhichevan, a monograph on Armenian paliography, a psychological analysis and a biography of the Armenian painter, Minas).

To remind, the "Studies on Strategy and Security" is a summary of various expert analyses and commentary on the military-political security of Armenia. It aims at identifying and classifying the basic elements of the salient issues, as well as the major directions of research and methodologies in the field. The book includes articles by 18 authors, including international and regional security and military experts, political scientists, historians and psychologists.

This volume investigates the core issues of the agenda of modern strategic thought of Armenia, including: the armed forces and the military doctrines of Armenia and its adversaries – Azerbaijan and Turkey; the vital importance of the liberated territory for Armenia; the urgent problems related to the information war being waged against Armenia; the development and the improvement of the relationship between Armenian society on one hand and the Armenian state and army on the other; some aspects of military history that have current relevance for Armenia; the role of ethnic psychology in Armenian-Turkish relations; as well as classical and contemporary theories of strategy. “ARARAT” Center for Strategic Research presents:
Military Psychology and Sociology Series, Volume I

“PSYCHOLOGY AND THE SOLDIER”

(in Armenian Translation)

The book represents a popular analysis and description of many important issues in military psychology and training. It discusses, inter alia, the morale and psyche of troops, psychological aspects of discipline, reasons behind the feelings of fear and horror among soldiers, their influence on the combat efficiency of troops, and the means and factors for effective leadership of a commanding officer. The author, in a compelling manner, talks about the problems of command and management in the army.

The opinions and conclusions of the author are illustrated by examples from world military history and, in particular, the war experience of the British army. The instructive stories from the lives of great commanders and military aphorisms are utilized amply as well.

The popular book by English military psychologist Norman Copeland was first published during the World War II. The book had several later editions (the latest in 2007); it was also translated and had two editions in Russian (in 1960 and 1991).

Upon the initiative of the “ARARAT” Center for Strategic Research, the complete translation of this work was done by the prominent Armenian psychologist Albert Nalchajyan, who also provided the commentaries as well as wrote the epilogue to the Armenian edition of the book.

The “ARARAT” Center for Strategic Research is hopeful that this publication will promote studies of military psychology in Armenia, particularly of the issues in ethnic psychology of an Ar¬menian soldier. Henceforth, it will contribute to the development of proper non-traditional means for the strengthening of the discipline, the preclusion of desertion cases and the creation of an atmo¬sphe¬re of brotherly relations in the Armenian Army.

The book is aimed for the officers, sergeants, soldiers and all those who are interested in military psychology and military history.

Montreal, April 4, 2007 - On March 28th, the AGBU Montreal Jirair and Elise Dervishian hall was filled by about 100 attendees who came to listen to the lecture of Dr. Armen Ayvazian, given within the popular and unique Armenian Studies program of AGBU. The topic of the lecture was "What is the true purpose of preserving Armenian identity"?

Dr. Ayvazian heads the Ararat Center for Strategic Studies in Armenia. Mr. Chahe Tanachian, a member of the Executive Committee introduced him and his accomplishments. After he took the podium, Dr. Ayvazian convincingly argued for an Armenia-centric policy for all of the Diaspora and its institutions.
He presented the key issue of lack of human capital and its erosion in Armenia. He went over the history and showed the lack of official institutions within current Diaspora/Armenia relationship. Finally, he outlined some potential solutions to this critical matter such as organizing re-immigration into Armenia, particularly for the endangered communities of the war-torn Middle Eastern countries, which could create win-win scenarios for both sides. He also made the case for the ongoing exchange of people and ideas between Armenia and the Diaspora, especially within the context of the current critical lack of long term strategic thinking expertise in Armenia proper.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. Ayvazian graciously answered several questions from the audience. This was the fifth and final lecture that Dr. Ayvazian gave during his Montreal tour.
